Night vision: why any hunter avoids white on the walk-in

How deer see each color
Here is where red pulls ahead for stealth. Deer are dichromats — they have two color-sensing cone types rather than the three humans have. A review of cervid vision research describes deer eyes as most sensitive to short and middle wavelengths, meaning blue and green, while lacking the long-wavelength cone that lets humans perceive red and orange clearly. Studies of whitetail cone sensitivities point the same way: the deer's visual system is tuned toward the blue-green end of the spectrum, and red sits in the range they perceive poorly.
The practical takeaway is that a red beam is one of the least visible lights you can put in front of a deer, and a green beam — while still far better than white — falls closer to the part of the spectrum deer see well. That does not mean green will automatically get you busted; a dim, well-aimed green light is still discreet. But if a deer is close and you want the lowest chance of being noticed, red is the more conservative pick. A colored beam distorts what you see — green in particular can wash out or darken red sign until droplets blend into the background and disappear. Red light has its own problem for this task: shining red on red can flatten the contrast that makes blood stand out. The result is that a colored light can walk you right past sign you would have caught under white.
The clean workflow is to use color to get there and white to work the trail. Move to the area of the hit quietly with a low red or green beam so you do not alarm any deer still nearby, then switch to a good white light — ideally a floody, high-CRI beam — to actually grid the ground and follow blood. Trying to save your night vision while blood trailing is a false economy; once you are on the trail, seeing the sign clearly is the whole game.
