How to choose a hunting laundry detergent

First decide pre-dosed or liquid. Sheets and pods are pre-dosed, mess-free and the format you’re most likely to use consistently; liquid is cheaper per load and lets you dose up for filthy, sweat-soaked base layers. Then check two labels: it should be fragrance-free(or a deliberate, light earthy cover scent — not floral) and free of UV brighteners. Those brighteners are the hidden problem: regular detergent adds them to make whites “pop,” and they fluoresce under the UV wavelengths a deer sees well.

Elimination vs cover scent

Most hunting detergents aim for pure elimination— remove odor, add nothing. A few finish with a subtle earthy note as a mild cover scent. Neither is wrong; they’re two philosophies. Frequently asked questions

Can't I just use regular unscented detergent for hunting?

It's better than perfumed detergent, but most regular 'free & clear' detergents still contain UV brighteners — optical additives that make fabric fluoresce under the blue-UV wavelengths a deer sees well. Dedicated hunting detergents leave those out and are formulated fragrance-free. If you use a household unscented, at minimum confirm it has no optical brighteners.

What are UV brighteners and do they really matter?

UV (optical) brighteners are additives in most laundry detergents that absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible blue, making whites look brighter to us. Deer are more sensitive to short/blue wavelengths than humans, so brightener-treated clothing can appear to glow — especially in low light. Hunting detergents omit them, which is a real, if hard-to-quantify, reason to use one.
