How to choose a hunting headnet

Start with coverage vs sight picture. A full mesh netcovers the whole face including the eyes — the most complete concealment, but you shoot through the mesh, which takes a little practice to trust. A 3/4 net covers the nose, mouth and neck and leaves the eyes open for a clean, unobstructed view; many shooters strongly prefer it and add a swipe of face paint around the eyes to finish the job.

Weight, warmth and breathability

A lightweight meshnet breathes for warm early-season and turkey sits and packs to nothing — the right call when concealment, not warmth, is the goal. It offers no warmth for the cold, so late-season hunters usually reach for a fleece neck gaiter or a heavier balaclava instead. Frequently asked questions

Can you see well enough to shoot through a mesh headnet?

Yes, but it takes a little getting used to. A full mesh net over the eyes slightly blurs your view, so practice mounting your gun or drawing your bow with it on before you hunt. If it bothers your aim, choose a 3/4 net that leaves the eyes open and add face paint around your eyes for full coverage without shooting through mesh.

Headnet or a fitted face mask — which is better?

A mesh headnet is cooler, more breathable and gives full-face coverage you can see through, ideal for warm-weather and turkey hunting. A fitted mask or balaclava is warmer for late season and stays snug, but can be hot early and may interfere with a bow anchor. Do I need a headnet for deer hunting or just turkey?

Turkeys have exceptional eyesight, so a headnet is near-essential for them. For deer, it's very useful at close range — especially bowhunting, where a deer inside 30 yards can catch your bright, moving face. From a distance or an enclosed blind it matters less. If you shoot a bow or hunt open setups, a headnet or mask is worth wearing.

Will a headnet make me too hot?

A lightweight mesh net is very breathable and fine for warm early-season and turkey sits; it adds almost no warmth. A heavier 3D leafy or fleece-lined net will be warmer. Match the net to the temperature: thin mesh for heat, and switch to a fleece neck gaiter or balaclava when you need warmth in the late season.

Does a 3D leafy headnet catch a bowstring?

It can — the hanging fabric leaves that make it hide so well can also snag a bowstring or brush. Before you hunt, draw your bow with the net on to check clearance, and tuck any stray strands out of the string's path. If the leaves interfere, switch to a flat mesh net for bowhunting and save the 3D version for gun or camera work.
