Which ropes do you actually need?

For saddle hunting: a tether (to hang from) plus a lineman’s rope (for the climb) — two ropes, minimum. A matched kit is the easiest way to get both without mismatching them. For a fixed hang-on or ladder stand: a hanging lifelineyou clip into at the base and stay on until you’re back down — one per stand you hunt. In every case, you also need a full-body harness; the rope keeps you connected, the harness catches you.

Buy rated rope and learn the hitches

Only use rope sold and rated for tree-hunting life safety, with sewn or properly terminated ends — never improvise with cordage from the hardware store. And a rope is only as safe as the hitchyou tie: learn a girth hitch to attach it and a friction hitch (like a Prusik) to adjust it, and practice at ground level until it’s automatic. What ropes do I need for saddle hunting?

At minimum, two: a tether (the rope you hang from while hunting) and a lineman's rope (which keeps you attached to the tree as you climb and hang gear). Plus a full-body harness or saddle to catch you. A matched rope kit gets you both ropes without the risk of mismatching them.

What's the difference between a tether, a lineman's rope, and a lifeline?

A tether is what a saddle hunter hangs from once set at hunting height. A lineman's rope wraps the tree and keeps you attached while you climb and work. A lifeline is a rope you hang on a fixed stand, clipping in at the base so you're connected from the ground up and back down.

Can I use regular rope for a tree tether?

No. Use only rope specifically rated for tree-hunting life safety, with properly terminated ends. Hardware-store rope isn't rated for shock loads or fall arrest and can fail catastrophically. Your tether and lineman's rope are life-safety gear — buy the real thing and inspect it every season.

Do I still need a harness if I have a tether?

Yes. The tether and lineman's rope keep you connected to the tree; the harness (or the saddle itself) is what actually catches and holds you in a fall. They work as a system — rope plus harness plus the correct hitches — and skipping any part leaves a dangerous gap.
